Why Your Heat Stopped: Riello Burners, Diesel Heaters, Lasko Heaters, and a Strange Fridge Problem

I coordinate emergency parts and service for a commercial HVAC company in the Northeast. In the last two years, I've handled roughly 140 urgent requests — maybe 150, I'd have to check the log — for clients who had one thing in common: heat stopped at the worst possible time.

The calls usually start with it was working yesterday. Sometimes it's a Riello gas burner locked out at a food processing plant. Sometimes it's a diesel heater in a construction trailer. Once in a while, it's a refrigerator that isn't cold enough, which isn't a heating problem at all, but it becomes one when the client panics.

There's no single answer. The right move depends on what equipment you have, what it runs on, and what the actual symptom is. So here's the decision tree I use.

Start Here: Which Situation Are You In?

When I'm triaging a no-heat call, I don't start with the burner. I start with fuel type and failure pattern:

Read the section that matches your equipment. If you're still not sure, Section 5 has a quick way to decide.

1. Riello Gas and Oil Burners: Two Common Failure Modes

Riello gas burners: lockout is a symptom, not the problem

If you're dealing with Riello gas burners, the most common emergency call I get is the red light is on. That's lockout. The burner controller stopped the unit because it didn't detect a stable flame in time. It's the burner doing its job, not a broken burner.

Start with these checks:

If it locks out again after one or two resets, stop. I know it's tempting to keep hitting the reset button, but I do not recommend going past that. Repeated resets can send unburned gas into the combustion chamber before the burner tries to light again.

From our 2024 call log, about one-third of gas burner lockouts were fixed by cleaning or replacing the ionisation electrode and setting the gap. The other common categories were gas pressure and air/gas adjustment. In other words, the burner itself is rarely the whole story.

Riello oil burners: the motor runs, but the flame disappears

With Riello oil burners, the symptom is often different. The burner starts, the motor runs, but the flame either doesn't form or shuts off after a few seconds.

The common causes:

If you run an oil burner, consider keeping one spare nozzle, a filter, and a gasket on the shelf. That's not a sales pitch — it's scheduling. A small part can turn a two-day outage into a two-hour one. Not ideal, but way better than waiting for a part that's not on the truck.

2. Diesel Heater: Check Voltage Before You Check Fuel

Diesel heaters are common in trailers, off-grid sites, and agriculture. They're compact, but they rely on a precise startup sequence. When a diesel heater isn't heating, I look for error codes first.

Oh, and fuel quality matters. In cold weather, diesel can gel. If the tank was filled from an old drum, the heater will act broken. It isn't — it's starving.

3. Lasko Heater and Other Electric Space Heaters: Cheaper to Replace Than Repair

A Lasko heater is a simple resistive heater. There's no combustion, no fuel pump, no electrode. Just a heating element, a fan, a thermostat, and a thermal cutoff.

If the fan runs but there's no heat, the heating element or the thermal cutoff has failed. If nothing at all happens, check the outlet, the plug, and the tip-over switch. In many models, a tripped tip-over switch won't reset until the unit is unplugged and placed upright for a few minutes.

Honestly, I've never seen a Lasko heater worth opening up. Cheaper to replace than repair, in most cases I've seen. But don't plug one into a power strip or an undersized extension cord. I've seen melted receptacles from exactly that. Wall outlet, direct connection, clean filter — that's the whole maintenance routine.

4. Why Is the Fridge Not Cold but the Freezer Is?

Here's the wildcard. If the freezer is cold and the fridge section is warm, the refrigeration system is probably still working. The compressor, condenser, and evaporator are doing their job. What's failing is the connection between the icy part and the cold part.

In most frost-free refrigerators, the evaporator coil sits in the freezer. A fan moves air through it, then through a damper into the fridge. When that fan fails, gets buried under ice, or the damper gets stuck closed, the cold stays in the freezer. The fridge gets warm even though the compressor is fine.

Before you call anyone:

This is a cooling problem, but it can feel like a heating emergency if the fridge is in a commercial kitchen. I once had a client request an emergency burner service call because a walk-in fridge was warm. It was a stuck damper — a half-hour fix once you know what to check.

5. How to Tell Which Branch You're On

If you're not sure which section applies, ask three questions:

  1. What fuel does it use? Gas goes to Section 1. Oil goes to Section 1. Diesel goes to Section 2. Electric goes to Section 3. If it's a refrigerator, it's Section 4.
  2. What's the failure pattern? Won't start at all points to fuel, voltage, or electrical supply. Starts then stops points to flame detection, fuel supply, or a safety trip. Runs but no heat points to the heating element or air flow.
  3. What's the worst case? A gas or oil burner that won't stay running is a safety concern. Don't bypass locks. A diesel heater with heavy smoke should be shut down. A space heater that smells hot is a fire risk. A fridge with a cold freezer and a warm fridge is not a safety emergency in the same way.

One more thing about small clients: don't assume your order size changes how quickly we move. One of my favorite accounts started with a single $300 oil burner part for a small auto shop. We treated it with the same urgency as a hospital boiler. Three years later, that shop is a multi-site customer. Small doesn't mean unimportant — it means potential.

According to Riello's documentation and the current NFPA 31 and NFPA 54 standards, a burner that won't stay running should be serviced by a qualified technician. The reset button is for restarting, not for diagnosing.

This was accurate as of February 2025. Safety standards and product line-ups change, so verify current setup details before doing anything beyond basic troubleshooting.

So glad we put a spare nozzle policy in place years ago. It saved a client's opening weekend once, and it's still the first thing I mention to anyone with an oil burner. Sometimes the small part makes the difference between a good week and a bad one.
