I'm a quality lead at a heating equipment distributor. My job is to inspect Riello burners and replacement components before they leave the warehouse—new units, service parts, the lot. Does a Riello gas burner have a fuel pump?
No. A Riello gas burner running on natural gas or LPG does not have a fuel pump mounted on the burner. Gas arrives already under pressure. The gas train—solenoid valves, gas pressure switch, regulator—controls its flow, but nothing on the burner pumps it.
The phrase "riello gas burner fuel pump" usually comes from someone who actually owns an oil-fired burner. Oil models use a fuel pump to lift oil from a tank, pressurize it, and feed the nozzle. Gas models simply don't need that component.
What does a Riello burner fuel pump do in an oil-fired system?
On an oil-fired Riello burner, the fuel pump is the heart of the firing system. It pulls oil from the tank through the suction line, pressurizes it, and delivers it to the nozzle. It also seals off the oil supply when the burner stops, so oil doesn't drip into the combustion chamber between cycles.
Most Riello light-oil pumps are set somewhere in the 8–15 bar range, but the exact pressure depends on the burner model and nozzle. What matters is the result: if the pump can't hold pressure, the nozzle can't atomize the oil properly. The flame gets lazy and sooty, the burner gets noisy, and eventually the control locks out.

Then I check the suction side. A pump can be perfect, but if the line to the tank is blocked, airlocked, or leaking, the pump will just churn air. A vacuum gauge on the suction port answers that question in seconds. I'd rather see that reading than guess from a lockout code.
Why does a Riello gas burner keep locking out?
A gas burner locks out when its control doesn't detect a flame within the safety time after the gas valves open. That's a protection response, not a random failure. The reset button is red for a reason.
On Riello gas burners, the causes I see most often are:
- Gas supply issue—service valve closed, low supply pressure, or a gas pressure switch that isn't made.
- Air proving problem—dirty fan, blocked air intake, or an air pressure switch set beyond its working range.
- Weak ignition—ignition transformer working but electrodes worn, dirty, or gapped incorrectly.
- Flame detection problem—ionization electrode dirty or positioned so the flame doesn't cover it properly.
Check those before replacing a gas valve or calling the burner faulty. And do not keep resetting a burner that locks out repeatedly. If it locks out three times in a row, get a technician to measure gas pressure and ionization current while it's trying to fire. Riello publishes expected values in the manual. Put another way: the burner is telling you what it needs. The measurement usually points straight to the cause.
When should a Riello burner fuel pump be replaced?
Not on a fixed schedule. A fuel pump on a well-maintained oil burner can outlast a lot of other components. When it does fail, it's usually because of contamination, lack of maintenance, or a shaft seal that dried out after a long shutdown.
During annual service, the pump should be tested, not just looked at. A technician should check pressure, vacuum, the internal strainer, and any signs of oil around the shaft. A high-frequency whine under load is often starvation, not a dead pump. Clean the filters and test again before replacing anything.
From my own corner: I've fitted genuine Riello replacement pumps on units that had been serviced every season for more than a decade. I've also seen a system with a missing tank filter go through two pumps in under three years. Maintenance history matters more than calendar age.
Generic fuel pump or genuine Riello part?
The difference isn't generic equals garbage. The difference is specification certainty.
Riello chooses pumps by flow rate, pressure range, rotation direction, shaft length and diameter, connection ports, and bypass configuration. A non-OEM pump may match two of those and miss a third. It will bolt on, it will spin, and it may still cause a service call three months later.
Back in 2023, I rejected a batch of universal replacement pumps because the shaft was 4 mm short. They installed cleanly. The pump and motor coupling meshed. But under load and heat, the coupling started hopping and wore out within weeks. To a customer, it looked like a Riello coupling defect. It wasn't.

If you're a certified heating technician, yes. If you're a homeowner, think about what the job actually requires beyond unbolting the old pump.
The new pump has to be primed. The suction and return lines have to be checked for leaks. Pump pressure has to be set, and the burner should be combustion-tested afterward to confirm the air setting still matches the new fuel delivery. In many regions, oil heating work is regulated. Know your local requirements before starting.
If you don't own a vacuum gauge, a pressure gauge, and a combustion analyzer, this is not the job to learn on. Work with a local technician, and use the model number from the burner plate when ordering parts. That little silver label saves more time than any shortcut I know.
